“Can We Talk?” Workshop Series for Parents and
Caregivers
The workshop series can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. At Home: The entire course is online, allowing parents to walk through the six lessons with their children. In the Workplace: We provide workshops in the workplace at lunchtime. Ask your employer about bringing “Can We Talk?” into your place of work or organization. In the Community: We provide workshops in partnership with faith, community, and school-based groups. Contact us for more information on bringing a workshop series to your community. THE WORKSHOP SERIES Lesson 1: Can We Talk About Self Esteem and Healthy Kids?
How is your kid feeling?
Hopeful or hopeless? Empowered to succeed or
depressed? Parents play a huge role in how their
children feel and
effective parent-child communication is key in creating
nurturing
households. This workshop illustrates the problems kids are facing
every day, and
how parents can talk with their children about emotional health.Lesson 2: Can We Talk About Puberty, Sexuality, and Health? Yes, sex is on your kids’ minds. And that’s normal. But all kids have lots of questions and need their parents to talk with them about this complex issue. Parents are competing against the messages that come from TV, film and the Internet. So, it’s time for parents to take the lead. This workshop illustrates how parents can talk with their children about sexuality, health, and relationships. Special focus is placed on the promotion of healthy relationships and the prevention of teen pregnancy, STDs/HIV, and abusive relationships. Lesson 3: Can We Talk About the Internet, Media, and Mixed Messages?
Yes, your child is on-line chatting online with friends, strangers, and
companies seeking to
sell them everything from jeans to prescription
drugs. Is your child ready to say no to fraud,
intimidation,
cyberbullying, and credit card scams? This workshop illustrates how
parents
can talk with their children about using the Internet (and the
doorway to a billion people) safely and
smartly. We focus on how the
Internet can be a positive tool when used thoughtfully.Lesson 4: Can We Talk About Pressures, Stress, and Success? Kids are feeling lots of stress and are pressured to do all kinds of things at ages that would shock most adults. By 6th grade children report feeling peer pressure to drink alcohol, party, and have sex. This workshop illustrates how parents can talk with their children about responding to unhealthy peer pressure and focusing on healthy peer pressure (like getting good grades and staying in school). We highlight strategies of success used by young people in school and community life. Lesson 5: Can We Talk About Bullying, Conflict, and Violence? How is your child dealing with conflict? Is your child a victim or a bully? We know that all children witness all types of bullying and harassment. This workshop illustrates how parents and
children can
discuss bullying and violence prevention and take the lead in
preventing violence at
home, school, and in the neighborhood. The
workshop provides a forum for parents to learn how to
help their child
deal with conflict, and how schools and parents can work together to
create a
bullyproof and harassment-free community.Lesson 6: Can We Talk About Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drugs? Drugs are everywhere—from online drug stores, to the medicine cabinet, to the Friday night party down the street. This workshop illustrates how parents and children can talk about the prevention of alcohol abuse and illegal drug use. The workshops provide a forum for parents to discuss their concerns about legal and illegal drug use, as well as strategies for successfully addressing issues like addiction and recovery. |
